Liu Bei wanted him to help, but he refused. He said it was because his life was short, and didn't care about honor.
I found that the way she translated those highlighted parts is very interesting. It's hard for her to explain why she did so. It's surprising that a short statement "but he refused" really captured the meaning, and I don't know what could be better than that.
When I saw "his life was short", I almost bursted into laughter. It was funny. It's so American: Life is short!
My daughter has gone to a Chinese school for a few years now, and knows many Chinese characters. She just entered junior high. My job is to make sure that she spends about 10-15 minutes to listen, read, translate and record her reading in Chinese everyday. I have Penpower Chinese Expert software. It's a great tool with segmentation of sentences, onscreen dictionary and phrase dictionary, text-to-speech, voice recognition, handwriting recognition and MP3. Here we go.
